Man Makes Fire publishes in-depth outdoor gear reviews designed to help you find the right gear for your outdoor adventures. We use, test, and review gear including the best camping tents, best fly rod and reel combos, best fishing waders, best soft coolers, best camping stoves, SUPs, bikes, ski and snowboarding gear, and much much more.
These fly fishing rod and reel outfits are solid performers that are aimed at beginners. They tend to have medium-fast actions that cast best at short and midrange distances and feel great for a wide variety of casting skills. Most combos in 2022 come with fly line, which helps save you money. For most new fly fishers on a budget, I recommend a solid entry level combo at an affordable price point. If you have extra budget, you can upgrade and/or consider additional fly fishing gear like waders and/or wading boots.

The fly fishing opportunities in the Rangeley Region have to be seen to be believed. We are blessed with large cold water lakes connected by rivers that create the perfect habitat for native brook trout and landlocked salmon. This is a place where the fish are well fed and trophy sized. The opportunity to catch the largest brook trout of your life happens at every cast. Rivers with history and storied names like Rapid, Magalloway, Kennebago, and Cupsuptic could be the site of your next adventure. The landscape is also dotted with many small fly fishing only ponds that are home to native brookies and ready to be explored with canoe paddle in hand.
At the Rangeley Region Sports Shop we have a full staff of guides to help you experience the area waters. Our trips can be matched to whatever experience level you may have from the beginner to the seasoned angler. Our guides will work hard to provide you with a memorable outdoor experience. Most of our trips include scenic rides into the backcountry with the chance of seeing a diversity of wildlife. Our trips can also be very diverse. From large rivers with pools and trophy brook trout and salmon to rock hopping small streams filled with beautiful native brookies. We also can take you to quiet ponds for those who love still water fishing.
For those who have some experience with fly rods, stepping up to higher weights like 7 and 8 for larger game, or more delicate weights like 2 and 3 for small creek fishing, is doable. Great brands for intermediate fly fishers include Sage, G. Loomis and Hardy.
There are plenty of different brands of fly fishing equipment on the market today, with many of the big players consistently innovating with new, lightweight and ultra-durable technology. Here are a few of the top brands for fly rods.
Once the tip is gone, the rod is shot, and this can completely ruin a fishing trip. Treat the rod tip like a fragile piece of expensive china to ensure that none of your fishing trips are canceled without notice.

Could not be more thrilled to recommend Bob Dye and fishing on the Colorado river! My fiancé booked us a trip for my birthday and we had a fantastic time! We both caught a ton of fish! And maybe even more importantly, as folks new to fly fishing, we learned different kinds of fishing and new skills that will help us catch fish for years to come! If you are on the Colorado, gotta get Bob Dye to help show you where the fish are and help you catch a bunch!

Stopped in a RIGS two different days for fishing licenses. While we weren't using a guide, they were still very helpful and glad to discuss the water level at Ridgway State Park. They also had a great selection of gear and I ended up getting a great deal on a hat. So whether your fishing or just looking for some Colorado branded gear, a great place to stop by.
I took the Deluxe Gunnison Gorge float trip with 6 friends. Exceeded my expectations in every way! The 4 guides were congenial and competent, and they waited on us hand and foot. When we boarded the rafts each morning, they handed us our rods, fully rigged with flies, and we floated and fished all day. All you need to take is clothes and a hat; everything else was provided and was good quality. I felt like Teddy Roosevelt on safari! Excellent food (even ice cream and cheesecake!). And the fishing The river is loaded. I caught at least 40 brown trout from 10 to 20 inches, and even the first-time flyfishers had good luck. I could go on...but this experience was worth every penny. Just get a friend or two and do it!
1) Fly fishing is not a sport of necessities. It is a sport of preferences, opinions, credos and mystique. There are no right and wrong choices. If a fly rod does not make you happy, choose another fly rod.
1) Consider your budget, then buy the best rod you can afford. You should spend approximately twice as much on your rod as your reel. Your fly rod should help you develop your skills. We run an instruction-oriented guide service in the resort town of Telluride and commonly encounter anglers who are fighting their gear, often because the fly rod was underprioritized in the equipment acquisition process. Beginners and experts alike benefit from a high quality fly rod. This is your physical connection to the sport. All Scott and Sage fly rods are covered by an Unconditional Lifetime Warranty, lending confidence to your initial purchase.
